The Ectomorph Body Type

Oh so lovely and delicate!

If you have an ectomorph body type, you have a thin, linear ruler body shape with narrow waists, hips, and shoulders. You may also be a combination shape like pear (ectomorph on top and endomorph/mesomorph on the bottom) or apple (endomorph/mesomorph on top and ectomorph on the bottom).

If you have an ectomorph body type, you tend to:

  • Be slim, skinny and find it hard to gain weight
  • Have hips and shoulders that are approximately the same width
  • Have delicate build, narrow hips and pelvis and long arms and legs
  • Have lesser fat and muscle mass
  • Have small bones and joints
  • Enjoy a faster metabolism, so you're able to burn more calories even at rest
  • Have the inherent capacity for cardiovascular endurance that enables you to maintain your lean body

Some other interesting ectomorph traits

As an ectomorph body type, you're as delicate inside as you are outside. You're often introverted, artistic, private and thoughtful. Your skin may burn easily and you may suffer from extreme body temperatures. Your hair is often fine and grows quickly.

What exercise is best for me as an ectomorph?

With an ectomorph body type, your metabolism is super fast, which means you're usually trying to gain weight and muscle mass. The first port of call is to take supplements (both protein and other) to get your calorie intake up easily and healthily (no - you can't just eat chocolate!).

To get the most out of your workout, you need to be patient and take longer breaks in between workout exercises. Strength and endurance will need to be developed as muscle mass develops very slowly, but keep at it - your curvaceous body is just a workout away!

Cardio exercise is necessary to stay healthy, but keep these workouts at 60 to 80% of your maximum heart rate in order to avoid burning too many calories that should rather be used to grow muscle mass.

Try to work out 3-4 times a week and do loads of stretching and toning exercises including pilates, yoga, body balance, or thai chi.

Loved to read your blog. I would like to suggest you that traffic show most people read blogs on Mondays. So it should encourage blogger to write new write ups over the weekend primarily

Now l have an answer as to why l am thin no mater how much or what l eat. Is being an ectomorph also the reason why the more l eat the more hungrier l become even if lm just lazing around?

Hi Lena
There could be numerous reasons for this. If you want the answer I would suggest speaking with you GP :)

My friend says no one follows this anymore and I'm should stop saying I'm an ectomorph and, "It's not 1960s" anymore. :(

I do like the way you have framed this matter and it really does provide us a lot of fodder for consideration. On the other hand, through just what I have personally seen, I just simply hope as the feed-back pile on that individuals remain on issue and in no way embark on a soap box regarding some other news of the day. Anyway, thank you for this superb piece and although I can not really concur with this in totality, I respect the viewpoint.

Finally fitness advice that ho,ds merrit and makes sense! I was so mislead until reading this now I know my instincts are spot on! I started on whey protein and feel my body feels more "compact" and know Pilates is perfect for me no matter what those other fitness blogs advise!

I am a 65 year old female who never had a weight or shape problem until the last few years. I am now working with a fitness trainer who told me I was an ectomorph and to look it up. All of your observations fit me perfectly when I was younger and help explain some of the things I now have to do to increase muscle mass while I am trying to get back in shape. Thank you so much!

Hello. I'm an ectomorph but I'm shortwaisted so I don't have much of a narrow waist. I'm thick waisted and want to burn off that fat but get bigger hips and legs. What specific workout should I do? And how many times a week? And what diet should I use?
